ADDICTION - Part 3

Knowing about Gambling addiction was fun!! Shopping Addiction is urge to spend more and more money and buy everything whether you need it or not. The addiction is also known as compulsive shopping or compulsive buying disorder. When we come across the term shopping it right away indicates women shopping but it affects men and women equally. Men do not over shop but they spend a way too much (on concerts, sports, and car).

About 60 percent of the population purchase things when they are on sale. As estimated 5-6 % of the American population is affected by this addiction and face financial crisis. Shopaholics is a common term we use to describe a shopping addict. Many shopaholics shop when they are stressed out because shopping makes them happy. It boosts the mood when they are low. Some shop for the perfect item and some just shop because they want to spend every single penny and buy everything.
People who shop this way believe that if they shop they will feel better but it generally makes them worse, it’s just like other addictions gambling, overeating, drinking.

Compulsive shopping addicts generally go to the nearest mall to buy one or two items but end up buying bags and bags of items which they don’t even need and when their relatives or family member finds out they tend to hide it from them.

Like all addicts you may hide your bills, receipts from people. Also you notice that you spend too much that you cannot afford. You also feel guilty about your previous shopping. When you see a new product in the market you get a craving to buy it whatever may be the cost. These all are symptoms!!

Shopping for once is positive. You feel happy and satisfied. But shopping regularly with price tags beyond your earnings may lead you to financial debts. The addiction also affects relationships. Shopping addiction is difficult to control as each and every individual is involved buying food and personal products weekly. But it can be controlled to a certain extent. Try not to give them cash, just cut them off or someone else should handle their finances or send them to money management classes. Individual counselling and therapy can also help.

If the problem is not dealt with they may find themselves caught in debts and they may lose the trust of their close friends and family members.

Just get back on the road to recovery.
